Barbara Burch, Alaskan resident since 1952, has adopted an unusual medium for her sketching talent. Bears, eagles, geese, ducks, puffins, moose, owls, foxes, or the Russian Orthodox church are wood-burned on the locally abundant bracken fungi, which grow on spruce trees on Kodiak Island. Background of the drawing is a landscape setting or may include a map of Kodiak. Each "bear bread" fungus is as individual as nature provides, and each design is an original.
As these pieces are one-of-a-kind, indicate size (small, medium, or large) and design choice and Barb will wood-burn your own original "piece of Alaska".

Small - Woodburned $50

Medium - Woodburned $85

Large - Woodburned $120

Email your request and we will quote you a price and approximate measurements of the fungus. There may be an additional shipping charge on this item, depending on weight of the fungus.

Cottonwood bark is the medium for hand-carved masks by long-time Kodiak artist Larry Amox, of Raven Creations. "The mask gives me its name as I carve it," says Larry, "and I engrave the name on the back of the finished work."
Larry is a versatile craftsman. Besides his masks, he fashions hand-sown baby booties, woven baskets in unusual shapes with driftwood or bone incorporated in the handle, or bone bead jewelry.
